I feel like it is hugely pivotal story for anyone with a highly active child. Her perspective is so refreshing and positive that no matter where you are in the mix of getting help for your child, it can help bring you a sense of relief and hope that you are not alone. It also helps give you a sense that your child can be who they really are and survive in this very judgemental world.
When I started reading this, I immediately identified with the author and her son. At times, I thought she was actually writing about my son. And her thoughts...so similar to my thoughts.
It is really remarkable howhearing other stories can make you feel so much better and also to help perk you up to new and interesting thoughts. There are so many great quotes in this book, I wish I could mention them all. Here's one that gave me a punch...
"...we urge our children to conform, in our hearts we still value the renegade. We yearn to be able to color outside the lines, to break a few rules, to do our own thing. What we really want is a child who is a creative thinker, but not so creative that he won't conform. We want a child who thinks outside the box, but not one that won't fit in it. We want a child who can stand alone, as long as he's not a loner...."
